Each day a boy dreams about owning a cat.
Because of the small space they occupy, his parents do not want any animals, so he must be
content to draw the cat of his dreams on paper. Each night as he finishes his drawings, he
stacks them neatly together in a carved box at the end of his bed, and after everyone has
gone to sleep he hears scritching and scratching noises, hissing and purring noises, but
he can never find out where they are coming from. It is only when he vows to stay awake
all night to identify where all of the sounds come from, that he keeps one eye open and
discovers his cats leap off of the paper into the middle of the room and begin to roam
freely about the house.
COMMENTARY:
What seems to be a time of magic and a
wonderful secret, turns into chaos times one thousand.
